European Biomass Conference and Exhibition 2023 in Bologna, Italy

After three years of a video-streamed conference, the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (https://www.eubce.com/) was organized as a real-world conference in Bologna, Italy on 5-9 June 2023. The conference brought together 1500 delegates from 79 countries around the globe. Some of the IEA Bioenergy Task 44 members were happy to participate the event and exchange and discuss the recent developments in the field of sustainable bioenergy and bioeconomy.

A concrete contribution by Task 44 was the presentation ‘Defining the value of bioenergy system services for accelerating the integration of bioenergy into a low-carbon economy’ in the session ‘European biomass production to support the EU bioeconomy’. The presentation highlighted the broader role of bioenergy beyond the energy system. The presentation provided examples on system services from sustainable bioenergy – e.g., flexibility, and synergies of green hydrogen and bio-based value chains deployment – and on relations between system services – e.g., between flexible bioenergy and BECCUS.
